In the meantime, I'm waiting for my paycheck for this month to come in. I don't want to take the car to a VW dealer (I heard that they load on a whole bunch of unnecessary things, as well as quote high) and I feel like if I don't do my research, I'll be ripped off and have to replace what I can't pay off. I plan to visit AutoZone tomorrow in the morning, and ask them to read the codes on the car and tell me what is wrong. Other places on the internet suggested that I may need to replace the catalytic converter, which costs a fortune especially for VW. I hadn't paid attention at the time to this, and I made a big blunder. I'm currently not using the vehicle and just doing my research - I may have made the mistake of using 87 instead of premium on the Passat. That appeared to have no effect whatsoever. We initially thought it was a coolant problem (we opened up the engine, and there was no coolant) and we rushed to an Autozone to get G12 coolant / the alternative fluid. I wrote it off as an effect of the hot summer weather.ΔΆ weeks ago, I was driving my roommate back to his place in LA (1 hour drive) when my check engine light suddenly came on. The car ran fine for about 2 months, but what I did notice was the engine was louder than normal. It may have probably been a ripoff, but I didn't know better at the time. It's been a mountain of mistakes since then. In June, I purchased an used VW Passat, 2003 GLX 4 motion for ~5k USD. About to graduate college and enter the industry (I study computer science) and I needed a vehicle. Long Version: Hi, I'm pretty new to the world of cars. What should I do? I don't have a lot of money. Poor college student who should have done research earlier instead of now. Did a bunch of research, realized I was using wrong fuel (used 87 instead of premium) and that I may have destroyed my car. Thought it was because lack of coolant, replaced coolant, light still on. Car ran fine for a while (2 months), check engine light came on. TL DR: Recently brought VW Passat 2003 GLX 4 motion v6. This might be the wrong subreddit, and I'd appreciate if you kind people could direct me towards the right direction.
